A March 17 article about insurance problems at Checker Cabs contained a number of serious factual errors. The article stated that hundreds of Checker Cabs have been crisscrossing the city for six months without insurance. That statement is wrong. Checker Cabs was insured for that period. Los Angeles city taxicab administrators say the policy number on file from Acceptance Indemnity Insurance Co. turned out to be invalid. But after the Daily News began asking questions about the situation, insurance broker Michael James of Michael E. James Insurance Agency of Alpine, Calif., provided valid proof of insurance for Checker from Century Surety. The article further stated incorrectly that there was an alleged scam.
