SANTA CLARITA – The College of the Canyons Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Program was awarded the MESA Center of Excellence award for the 2005-06 academic year for leading the state community college system in the number of transfer students in math-based fields. Of the 29 community college MESA programs in California, the college has the most transfers into four-year institutions. This was the second consecutive MESA award for College of the Canyons. The MESA program is an academic enrichment program for minorities, those from low-income families or other disadvantaged students. College of the Canyons’ MESA Program, established in 2000, has seen 200 students transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Graduates have gone on to careers with top employers including Amgen, Second Sight, Cedars Sinai and UCLA. MESA program director Susan Crowther credited the interaction of students with faculty members and the connections they make in the MESA Student Study Center for helping them make their way through college.last_img
